2018 in Review (Part One)
I can’t believe this year is almost over. While there’s been many challenges in 2018, it has also been a rewarding year and I am simply grateful that I can keep doing my art. Here’s a recap of all that went down from January to April.
- O Milagre das Kombis, Three Renders ///
- Recognize This Face?, 10 /// Lens (mis)correction and .psd databending glitch series
- DACALOGUE, Surname (07) + Artist Portrait at the Art Slant Prize Winner Booth at SPRING/BREAK /// My series on immigration media was the runner-up for the Art Slant Prize, which meant that I got to show at my first New York City art fair during Armory week <3 In addition, DACALOGUE was part of an exhibit of work by undocumented artists at the Riverside Art Museum, it was shown as part of the Blue \x80 glitch expo in Paris, it made the long list of the Lumen Digital Art Prize, and it was offered a book deal (which I couldn’t take bc I don’t have $30k to throw at a NYC publisher)
- Google Be My Passport, Santa Cruz do Rio Pardo (35) /// put some finishing touches on my 2015 series of undocumented street photography using the Google Street View cache. Being undocumented means not being permitted to leave the country, so the only way i could think of photographing my family’s neighborhoods was to use Google Street View. I submitted this series along with DACALOGUE to Foam’s talent call, but had no luck. But on the bright side, my Green Card finally came through this spring, putting a temporary end to my travel ban.
- Le Mystère Mario Paint, Landscape Painting (11), Variations in C (13C) /// Glitching Mario Paint ROMs has been an ongoing project, the pieces made using attract mode is a good antidote for the AI art craze (which btw is just proceduralism obscured by machine learning marketing language)
- Assassinx Postinternet, Just_Dance_01A /// Saving and glitching Nasim’s YouTube videos using div3 codec corruption as a kind of dirge for the lost souls of the postinternet age, and a meditation on the power of digital platforms over the work of artists.
